ACCA Exam Format 2026: All 13 Papers Explained
Part of CPA vs CMA vs ACCA vs EA: Which Certification Should You Choose? — see how ACCA stacks up against the other three ACCA's 3-level structure
ACCA is the most granular of the four qualifications by paper count — 13 papers total, grouped into 3 levels of increasing difficulty: Applied Knowledge (3 papers), Applied Skills (6 papers), and Strategic Professional (4 papers).
What each level covers
Applied Knowledge — Business and Technology, Management Accounting, and Financial Accounting — builds the foundation and is where most candidates start.
Applied Skills — Corporate Law, Performance Management, Taxation, Financial Reporting, Audit and Assurance, and Financial Management — is the core technical level and the largest of the three, at 6 papers.
Strategic Professional — Strategic Business Leader and Strategic Business Reporting are mandatory, plus 2 optional papers chosen from a set that includes Advanced Financial Management and Advanced Audit and Assurance, matched to your specialization.
Exemptions can shorten the path
Candidates with a relevant accounting or finance degree are often eligible for exemptions on some Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers, which can meaningfully shorten the number of papers actually left to sit. It's worth checking your exemption eligibility with ACCA directly before planning a study schedule.
